I knew my plates were clean and my driving good, but this was

5-0 and this was Cypress Park, where the LAPD made the rules. I

expected them to pull us over any minute and we‟d be making

concrete angels on the ground at their feet. I felt a pulse of fury

that we could be treated that way, but knew we would do what the

cops wanted in the hopes of avoiding worse shit.

When the lights came on and the blip of their siren warned us, I

swore and pulled over to the side of the road. Ceron and B-Boy

scrambled to stuff the booze under the seat while I cranked the

window open and waited for 5-0 to reach us. I was glad we hadn‟t

found the chronic or we‟d be spilling a cloud of smoke out of my

car and we‟d be jacked for sure.

A big, muscle-bound mayate strolled up to my side, his partner,

a Latina woman hung back. I could see her on her radio. The black

cop kept his hand hovering over his piece and a cold sweat broke

out on my neck.

Now I wished it was Alejandro and his fat partner.

“License and registration,” the cop said. His eyes were hidden

behind a pair of shades, his hat pulled down low over his forehead.

His dark skin was slick with sweat.

I handed the paperwork over and kept my face flat. I didn‟t

speak. It was never a good thing to talk to 5-0, you never knew

what might piss them off.

He strolled back toward the cruiser with my paper and I nearly

groaned out loud. I knew he was going to come back and drag us

all out, and once they found out we‟d been drinking I‟d be making

my first visit to county lockup. Shit. Shit. Shit. I knew I should

have gone home with Nattie. How long would they hold me? I

couldn‟t afford no lawyer; I‟d have to take a PD and who knows

how good he‟d be. Meanwhile, if I ran into any Locusts, they
